Grampians Health boosts nurse recruitment across campuses

12 September 2023
Grampians Health has been making significant strides in addressing the critical need for qualified healthcare professionals following the launch of an international recruitment campaign last year.
One of the main objectives of the recruitment program was to further strengthen our nursing teams and since its launch in March 2022, we have achieved remarkable success in attracting and hiring dedicated nurses to bolster our workforce.
A total of 167 nurses were recruited through our international recruitment program to fill various positions across our campuses over the past year.
“Our goal, as enshrined in our Strategic Services Plan, is to deliver high-quality, safe and accessible care to regional communities and that starts with strengthening our workforce capacity and capability to meet future demand in the communities we serve,” said Claire Woods, Chief People Officer, Grampians Health.
In Grampians Health’s Horsham and Dimboola sites, a total of 27 nurses have been recruited, with 18 already on board and actively contributing to patient care. Additionally, 9 more nurses are set to join the team soon, covering a diverse range of specialties including Nurse Pool, Medical/Surgical, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Aged Care.
In our Edenhope campus, 13 skilled professionals have been brought in. Of these, 11 nurses have already begun their roles, focusing primarily on aged care with some involvement in acute care. Two more nurses are expected to join shortly.
Our Stawell campus has had 5 nurses successfully recruited and among them, 3 nurses have commenced their duties, while 2 more are preparing to start. The specialties represented include Aged Care and Acute Care.
A total of 122 nurses were brought on board in our Ballarat campus since March 2022, out of which 89 nurses have already joined and are actively engaged in patient care. An additional 33 nurses are anticipated to join the team shortly.
The newly recruited nurses are from a variety of specialities, including Medical/Surgical Wards, Aged Care, Cath Lab, Dialysis, Emergency Department (ED), ICU, Rehabilitation, Specialist Clinics, Operating Suite, and Mental Health. Furthermore, 61 nurses will contribute to the Nursing Support Unit.
Grampians Health’s recruitment drive has also been successful in expanding other teams. Our site in Stawell has welcomed two new radiographers this year following our efforts to attract skilled professionals to regional Victoria. Meanwhile, two pharmacists were also recruited for the Ballarat campus.
We are also pleased to reveal that two social workers, recruited from the UK and Singapore, would soon join our team in Ballarat, further strengthening the hospital’s holistic approach to patient care.
“Even as healthcare workforce recruitment remains a challenge nationally and globally, we’re pleased to make some headway in further bolstering our workforce,” said Ms Woods.
“However, global recruitment is not the only way we’re pursuing. We are also looking to fill gaps in our workforce through paid training and professional development opportunities for existing staff.
“We’re keen to showcase Grampians Health as an employer of choice for the region, and show how great the opportunities for career progression are for those who want them.
