Grampians Health Horsham welcomes first cohort of medical interns for 2025

18 February 2025
Grampians Health Horsham is excited to announce the arrival of its first cohort of medical interns for 2025. Over the course of the year, Horsham will host a continuous rotation of interns every ten weeks, providing them with hands-on experience in various clinical settings, including inpatient wards, surgical wards, and anaesthetics.
For these young doctors, it is their first time working in the Wimmera region, and just five weeks into their ten-week rotation, they are already expressing how welcoming and supportive the local community and their colleagues at Wimmera Base Hospital have been.
Dr. Annie Guo, one of the interns, shared, “Everyone has been so supportive and patient while we settled into our time here. It is a very stable environment; we come to work and see the same staff each week, which isn’t always the case in larger metropolitan hospitals.”
Dr. Connie Malliaras added, “We’re building strong connections with Allied Health professionals and senior clinicians, and this continuity of care makes learning so much more effective.”
These interns, who hail from Melbourne, Gippsland, Ballarat, Ardmona (near Shepparton), and even Northern China, understand the pressing need for more doctors in regional Australia, but none had considered working regionally. They were, however, pleasantly surprised by the variety of experiences offered by working in a regional setting.
“In just five weeks, we’ve encountered a diverse range of patients, from hernia repairs to heart failure and paediatric surgeries. In larger hospitals, these cases are often split into specialties, but here, we get to learn across a broader spectrum of care,” said Dr. Sylvia Sherborne.
Though they only met upon arriving in Horsham, the interns have already formed strong bonds with each other, grateful for the friendly welcome they’ve received both from their colleagues and the local community.
Grampians Health Horsham is proud to play a role in shaping the next generation of medical professionals and providing them with invaluable experience in a regional healthcare setting.
