Grampians Health Horsham records uptick in outpatients amid new doctor appointments

The addition of former Sydney surgeon Dr James Gallagher to Grampians Health’s medical team has played a significant role in an impressive increase in outpatient appointments at the Horsham campus.
Prior to joining Grampians Health Horsham in February this year, Dr Gallagher worked as a locum surgeon at the Alan Wolff Medical Centre.
Medical centre manager Heather Parker said Dr Gallagher’s contribution was one of several reasons for the increase in outpatient appointments.
“Before moving to our region, Dr Gallagher specialised in liver transplant surgery at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, but he is a general surgeon who seems to thrive on a solid workload,” Ms Parker said.
“We have seen a significant rise in surgical procedures since his arrival.”
Ms Parker said there were other contributing factors for the increased output.
“We have a new orthopaedic surgeon and two new paediatricians that we didn’t have before,” she said.“
Dr Niroshan Amarasiri and Dr Susima Pallemulla are both kept very busy with paediatric services, and our new orthopaedic surgeon Dr Ferraby Ling is also very popular and well regarded.
“On top of that our neurologist Dr Fari Islam is now seeing public patients, so all these factors have amounted to our impressive numbers.
”Enhancing self-sufficiency and increasing the availability of specialist clinical care to western campuses are among the key themes identified in Grampians Health’s Clinical Services Plan.
As part of achieving those objectives, Ms Parker said more services were planned for 2023 in Horsham.
“Next year we have two new physicians starting as well as a new obstetrician/gynaecologist and by February we will have a new cardiologist at the centre.”
