EN Trainee is living the dream in Edenhope

26 October 2022

Sheena O’Connor, one of Grampians Health’s newest EN Trainee recruits, is delighted to be able to study and work without having to relocate.

Grampians Health’s latest cohort of Enrolled Nurse (EN) trainees outside of Ballarat have commenced their roles across the organisation’s Edenhope, Horsham and Stawell campuses.

Edenhope resident Sheena O’Connor always wanted to go back to school and complete the nursing studies that she started when she first left high school.

“When I heard about the EN trainee program through Grampians Health I thought it was an amazing opportunity,” said Sheena, who was excited about being able to study and work at the same time.

“It’s great being able to learn something in class and then put it into practice when you go to work. I think it’s the best way to learn.”

The EN Traineeship program is a two-year course across Edenhope, Horsham and Stawell campuses and will be complete in April 2024. The 19 trainees are paid to earn while they learn and will rotate through placements to gain expertise and build their skills sets across numerous clinical departments.

“So far, I’ve been working at Lakeside Living residential aged care facility and completing my study units at the Horsham campus. Next year I will be completing mental health, community and acute placements which I am really excited about,” said Sheena.

Enrolled Nurses are a critically important part of Grampians Health, delivering high quality care while building good relationships with the patients, clients and residents they’re caring for.

On being asked about her future plans, Sheena said: “I would love to continue studying and complete my Registered Nursing. Once I’ve done that I’d love to do bush nursing/rural remote but I guess I’ll see what happens!”

Many EN trainees are also expected to join Grampians Health’s nursing workforce on a full-time, part-time or casual basis upon completion of the program.
